UPDATE – May 6, 2013, 2:45 PM EDT – Today the Heritage Foundation also posted the following:

The conservative Heritage Foundation is claiming in a new report that bipartisan immigration legislation pending in the Senate would cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion.

The study from the Republican-led group opposed to an immigration overhaul is sure to come under fire. Already, the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute has decried it as “fatally flawed.” Critics say it doesn’t measure economic boosts from the bill.

$6.3 Trillion?

Editor’s Note – The debate is on, and the ‘Gang of 8’ seem to be deciding what the rest of Congress will vote upon. Somehow this smacks of that silly “Super Committee” that could not get around the ‘Sequester’ issue. Senator Marco Rubio is featured in ads to the public about the whole issue but he even thinks it needs to be fixed prior to the votes.

Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio says a new immigration bill he helped write needs stronger border security provisions or it will fail in the House and may even have trouble getting through the Senate.

Rubio, who is the chief emissary to conservatives on the contentious legislation, said in a radio interview and in an opinion piece being published in Friday’s Wall Street Journal that he’s been hearing concerns in recent days that more work is needed to boost the bill’s language on the border and he said he’s committed to trying to make those changes. Former Senator Jim DeMint from the Heritage Foundation

But despite this, Senator Dick Durbin wants the ‘basic agreement’ to remain intact.

A leading Democrat in the U.S. Senate said the bones of an immigration reform bill will remain in place despite some anticipated tweaks.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said some adjustments to the bipartisan measure were inevitable but the “basic agreement” needed to remain intact.“We have got to basically stick to the standard of what we’ve established, what we’ve agreed over the last three months,” Durbin said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” (Read the rest here.)

But like the Obamacare Bill (PPACA), its too big, too confusing, and too over the top, ask Jim DeMint what he thinks if you knew what was in it. Our bet is few in Congress will ever read the 870 plus pages it now includes:

DeMint on Immigration Reform: ‘If People Read The Bill, It Will Be Blocked’

By Andrew Stiles – NRO’s “The Corner”

Former senator and current Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint on Sunday predicted that the Gang’s of Eight’s immigration reform bill would be blocked “if people read the bill.”

“I think if people read the bill, that it will be blocked,” DeMint said on ABC’s This Week. “Because once you get into it, just like Obamacare, it is not the way it’s been advertised.”

DeMint also previewed the results of a Heritage Foundation study coming out next week, which will highlight the “staggering cost” of the proposed legislation — potentially “in the trillions of dollars.”

“Our country faces very difficult economic and financial problems,” DeMint said. ”There’s no reason we can’t begin to fix our immigration system so that we won’t make [these problems] worse. But the bill that’s being presented is unfair to those who came here legally, it will cost Americans trillions of dollars, it will make our unlawful immigration system worse.”
