At 10:30 PM, Syrian time, FSA commanders directly informed SUA and LFP (Lebanon Foundation for Peace) Middle East Staff that major battles in and around Damascus today have resulted in a resounding victory for the rebels over Assad Regime forces.
The area of Reef (Mountains near Damascus) saw heavy fighting and FSA Firkan Unit forces overran five positions and captured five regime battalions. More than 150 regime fighters died in the battle and the remaining troops surrendered to FSA forces.
Regiment 90 forces of the Assad Regime also lost many armored vehicles and a large amount of ammunition to FSA forces. Three tanks and numerous Russian BMP vehicles were part of the captured armor.
(Note – a Syrian battalion can consist of between 300 and 1,200 troops and several battalions make up a regiment or a brigade. Therefore over 1,000 troops were captured, likely much more.)
